29 October 2008: In July 2007, Daniel Johnston made a highly acclaimed appearance at London's Union Chapel. Adjustable Productions now present the greatly anticipated film of this concert: 'The Angel and Daniel Johnston - Live at the Union Chapel'. During the eighties and nineties Johnston emerged with a reputation for crafting brilliant pop songs. Opportunities for commercial success were inevitably hampered by long periods of hospitalisation due to depression and mental illness. In spite of these setbacks, Johnston has gained a massive worldwide following and has been championed by the likes of Kurt Cobain, David Bowie, Johnny Depp and The Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening. In recent times, Johnston has entered a period of stability and renaissance, culminating in a performance described by the Evening Standard as "...nothing short of breathtaking" and which has been captured in ‘…Live at the Union Chapel’. Supported by a selection of friends, including the notable talents of James Yorkston and Adem, early collaborator Brett Hartenbach and a specially assembled group of underground British musicians, Daniel delivers definitive renditions of favourites from the breadth of his career, such as 'True Love Will Find You in the End', 'Walking the Cow' and 'Some Things Last a Long Time'. New songs such as 'Mean Girls...' and 'Try to Love' are introduced and a fresh shine is brought to some hitherto overlooked gems such as "Go" and "Living Life". Director Antony Crofts and Producer Robert Wheeler have funded, produced and distributed the DVD within their fledgling Adjustable Productions label. "This has been a fantastic challenge, 18 months in the making” says Crofts, “we wanted to do justice to the spirit of the event and not just churn out a factory line product". Distancing their work from such films, Adjustable have crafted a unique look with a process described as "video scuffing". This approach gained instant approval from Johnston: "I love the colours in this film... and I love the mix... It has the best version of 'The Story of an Artist' I have ever recorded." Presented in both stereo and 5.1 surround mixes, with a total running time of 82 minutes, featuring 21 live tracks, including bonus rehearsal footage, an exclusive post-concert interview, and with packaging based on Johnston's hand drawn artwork, 'The Angel and Daniel Johnston – Live at the Union Chapel' is a must have for long time fans and an ideal starting point for newcomers to this enigmatic artist. “The Angel and Daniel Johnston – Live at the Union Chapel” is available for pre-order now at Amazon.co.uk for December 8th release, and in North America from December 4th via Kunaki.com.
